When the feeling is right....

I wrote this song about playing music - and for some reason this theme is hitting me hard today. I am a person who feels like the music is better when I'm sharing it on stage with other people. I like having a band to share that feeling, that dynamic that happens when you're on stage and feeling it. I think I like feeling like there is someone else in the room who's feeling what I'm feeling, and therefore I feed off that energy. Lately circumstances have prevented me from having that feeling. Band members move on to different projects, life gets busy, it's easier to book for one person and not have to check 4 different schedules. So I do the solo gigs. I've known this all along - that feeling is still there even in the solo situations, but its shared in a different way. It's not the feeling of band mates grooving. It's the feeling of you and I connecting through music. Maybe for you, the song bring backs memories of days gone by, of loved ones, of certain situations.... for me it's knowing that for that moment, for that song, for that lyric or for that guitar riff, we connected -- we were on the same wavelength. It was a shared experience. That IS when the feeling is right. Four years ago - I released "Sketches" which was supposed to be just an acoustic and vocal release. Obviously as we got into the recording, some things changed. Many of you who will read this have that CD, and you've shared in my growth as an artist, and as a person. Many times I promised a new CD would be coming with new tunes only to have some circumstance sneak up and delay or stop the process. Within the next few months we WILL be releasing a new project. A band project - this recording is really representative of what GRE3NE is live - 4 individuals with varying musical styles, tastes, and influences coming together to create something that is uniquely their own. I'm excited for the project and the release. I sincerely hope that you will listen to and enjoy the music. Brian's jazzy percussion, Dave's bass feel, JP's guitar skills, the way that we put the music together .... I hope you listen and crave for more. I didn't start this blog with the intention of putting links or references to our campaign to finish the project, but my gut tells me I should - some people feel that we are asking you to finance us. Yes you're helping the process and in return you get a CD, or a download, and a t-shirt or a beanie or a hoodie or some other reward. Whether it's a $1 or $50 (or more) you get something back for what you put in. Check out this link here and join us. And that's a lot like the music we play - I feel that for every ounce of sweat I put in, I get something back. A smile, a nice comment, a hand shake.

Recording update..

Happy holidays!!It's 6 days before Christmas, are you all done with your shopping??? Wrapping??? Last minute shopping adventures coming up?? I am done shopping for the season, almost done wrapping and ready for the Christmas day fun. I look forward to seeing everyone's face as they unwrap their gifts - as I've gotten older that has become more of the fun of Christmas for me. In between the hustle and bustle of holiday time, family feasts, and shopping, the band and I have been working on our EP. I just wanted to share with you where we are at in the process. Brian Burke, drums, has been hard at work and after a week of recording has finished the drum parts for the recording. I'm excited, just hearing the drums by themselves I'm excited to hear how the sound expands when the rest of the guys add their mojo to the mix. I will be posting pictures of more of the aspects of recording as we go further in. Stay tuned!!! Lastly... I wanted to share that Christmas is a special time, and for some it's a hard time. Some are dealing with loss of loved ones, and it can be especially hard at this time of year. Thanksgiving and Christmas are huge family holidays and unfortunately for some that drives home the fact that some loved ones are missing. Extend a smile, or a hug, or love to someone you know who's having a rough time. You never know the good that something so simple can have on someone. And on that note, if you're looking for a fun Christmas celebration - join me at one of the following services. Sunday 9am & 11am or Monday 3pm, 5pm or 7pm at Lake City Community Church (6000 N. Ramsey Road, CDA, ID) great stuff!

Well, I survived! Thanksgiving, my daughters birthday, and Black Friday all in one weekend! I hope everyone out there had a great Thanksgiving!! Please feel free to comment and share with me anything fun, cool, exciting that happened to you! (this is after all supposed to be an interactive exercise). What did you score on Black Friday??? What was the best part of your Thanksgiving??? Thanksgiving was really good for me and the family. It was a nice time to chill and relax and eat!!! It's been a busy year for me and taking a day off to do nothing (no music, no recording, no business) and just hang with the family and watch tv (and yes my Cowboys lost), and chill with the family was fun. Perhaps the best part of the weekend for me was doing some shopping and hanging with my son. We hit Guitar Center and then went home and finished some recording on one of his songs. Life tends to catch up to us rather quickly - i can remember playing basketball on the floor with Gabe when he was barely able to walk and now he's got his own apartment, car, job and is experiencing life as an adult. He's a funny and a talented kid. It was cool to be able to check out guitars, talk about instruments we should get for the studio, and just kid around. Made me see him in a different light. Then as we worked in the studio together, sharing idea's on his songs and then working to complete them - it was a joy to see his drive, his thirst for excellence. Nothing warms a fathers heart more than to see his child take interest in something that he has interest in. To share a common ground as adults that not only extends time together but further cultivates bonds that last. Thats what makes me thankful this thanksgiving season. Till next time, RG

Recording time

So I have begun the steps to recording. I have a small home studio - it's not a total pro facility, but it's not a low budget scary place either. So it's good enough to get the job (although I'll probably need to send it out to be mixed and mastered elsewhere). At the moment I have three projects I'm working on. 1. The band project.2. The solo project.3. Gabriel Lee's project.I plan on using this blog post to give you sort of a behind the scenes look at what's happening. I'll use the blogger and facebook in conjunction so hopefully you'll get an idea of what it takes to make a cd happen. Today, I'll start by explaining the process behind picking the tunes for each project. With Greene (the band) it was pretty simple - we voted and the top four (it was supposed to be three, but there was a tie) song got put on the project. For my solo project, basically I took the songs that I wanted to record that the band didn't do. Some of those songs will have a band feel, some will have a singer/songwriter vibe, and yet others will be collaborations that I've been wanting to make. Gabriel Lee's project is him picking tunes he wanted to record (and one that I REALLY wanted to record). So no real science here, just picking tunes we think people will like, and one's we enjoy playing! More to come soon!Peace

Hello friends, Once again it's been months since I've updated this. I keep saying I'm going to be more consistent with updating the blog site, but here I am saying... sorry it's been so long! With the summer busy season over, it's fall and winter - time to sit back, look at what's been accomplished and start planning for next year. I've got my internal plans - but one of the external plans is the long talked about next CD. We (the band and I) had a kickstarter campaign that didn't go over like we hoped it would, but it was a lesson learned. So we are doing the independent thing to the hilt... we're going to use our own personal recording equipment and rooms and try to record a 3 - 5 track EP for the masses. No promises on a time table, or even what songs will be on it. Just know we're working on stuff. And actually part of my blogging experience will be with documenting what's happening with the recording process. It'll cause me to actually post items and it'll keep you informed! While I'll be slowing down gig wise in the fall/winter - life itself certainly doesn't slow down. I just got back from a great trip to Indianapolis, seeing family and visiting a few places. Check me out on Facebook to see some of the pics of family and fun! I'm going to close with a video ..... this is my take on Marry Me by Train. I'm singing it for a wedding and decided to post it. Thanks for reading and thanks for listening!RG

Why I play music

I don't play music to become a star. I don't play music to be cool. I don't play music just to get out of the house. I don't play music to become rich. I don't play music to get the girls attention. I don't play music so that the newspapers will notice me. Would I cringe if I became a star, or if people began to think I'm cool?? No. Would I be upset if music supplied my income? No. Would I be upset if the papers noticed? Of course not. I have the best wife in the world so I definetly don't care if girls notice me. My point is that those things aren't what motivate me, they aren't what continually draw me to a guitar or drive me to continue to book shows. I play music because it moves me. I play music because I love the feeling it gives. I play music becomes the gift was given to me. I play music becomes sometimes things I write or sing about connects with someone and they don't have to tell me, I can see it. I play music because it keeps my mind sharp. I play music because I FEEL it. I play music because when I'm down or upset, it can change my mood - lift my spirit. I play music because it's in me - I don't even have to have an instrument - I can hear it, see it, it's always there. This is why I play music.....
April 30/Being a judge for a karaoke contest..

Hi! Today is April 30.Not any real signaficance to this day, other than this is the day I chose to send out this blog. :) The last few weeks have been a blur (well they ALL are but that's another blog...) I've had 5 performances (one band show and 4 solo) and I've also had the pleasure of being a judge for a local (CDA Night Out Karoake contest) karaoke contest. Now I watch American Idol, The Voice, and the like and I'm always conversing with the family about the performances and giving my opinion. So it was very interesting to be asked to judge a karaoke contest. Granted it's not like American Idol, etc., we don't sit there and give advice after the performance. In our contest we (the judges) analyze the performance and give our thoughts via a private tally/judging sheet (we're not there to humiliate anyone - the contest is actually for anyone who DOESN'T get paid to perform) based on timing, pitch, crowd participation, stage presence, etc. It's actually been pretty cool to see so many talented people of all ages get up and sing their heart out. It's fun to watch the different "personalities" of the performers. The "rocker chic" rocking out, throwing her head back and forth as she belts out her tunes. The "cool dude" just chilling, drinking his beer while singing (quite well) his tunes. All of the Adele clones. It has been fun and it also has been a learning experience. In one venue, the karoake dj was quite adament about the judges showing their undivided attention to the contestants. Now don't get me wrong - we do need to pay attention (and we actually were) but as a performer I almost felt obliged to tell this person that even at concerts where the performer IS the main attraction, people converse and talk about things. Yes we want to engage you as we perform but in this time of short attention spans you aren't going to catch everyone's attention for 100% of the time. Having said that, I do want to make it clear that I would watch the performer, make my mental notes and then once the song was done start writing. Anyway... other than that slight annoyance, the judging has been fun and, like I said, it's been cool seeing so many talented people. So if you LOVE to sing (and have never been paid to do so) you should join the competition!! Check out THIS for more info. ($5 entry fee - but semifinalist for each venue make between $50 to $150 and grand finals 1st - 3rd receive between $1000 - $400)Hope you're having a great day.... just realized that starting this weekend (Saturday at Tito Macaroni's in Coeur d'Alene) I'll be performing somewhere every weekend until September!!! So please check my SCHEDULE and I hope to see you soon!

Music Success Challenge/Blog 2 (week 1)

So..... in re-reading my challenges I see that I AM supposed to log some of the goals that I have setup as part of this challenge. Makes sense to me as you sort of need some accountability in regards to some of these things. Although the MSC is not for "rules/regulations" - it is setup to challenge us and encourage us to share with others (you) our journey. I am a person who is always setting goals - whether its at my "day" job, or with music, or with family life, etc. What I've noticed is that a lot of the times I set goals that are more general in scope. I had originally set some goals when going through chapter 1 - but after reading some of the comments on Ariel's website I decided it was time to go back and make some more specific goals. So without further ado here are some of my goals.... I will by Oct 31 create a new bio and 15-second pitchI will complete 3 songs that I am working on by Nov 30I will will start exercising daily for at least 30 minutesI will increase e-mail readership by 10 people by Nov 30 I will start reading my Quiet Moments book with Jeni dailyI will start using Pro Tools on my computer for songwriting ideas by Dec 30Yes.... these aren't all music related goals, and they shouldn't be. There is more to life than music. Part of the goal of this exercise, to me, is to start using my time more wisely - to create and keep in place an even distribution of life throughout my schedule. Obviously I have more goals than this as well - but I just decided to share these things - so that I have something I can look back on and check off and something that you can share with and enjoy. Thanks so much for reading - until next time. Peace

It's been a week....

Ok so I'm getting off to a little slow start with the blogging!!! Sorry... Had a really crazy week last week with music... Practice monday evening with band, tuesday had work at home to do, wednesday I practiced for the church service I was playing in, Thursday I had rehearsal with the church band, Friday was the Friday evening church service, Saturday had my bands show, Sunday back at church for two more services playing in the worship band!! So yeah... last week was kind of lost to me. This week has really been me playing catch up with family things - and it's been a doozy of a week!!! Now here it is Thursday and I'm leaving tomorrow morning for a show in Union, OR. This has been a real test in prioritizing and trying to get things done. I've been slowly thinking about my goals and I will be sharing a few in the next blog. This is really a quick blog....... so much going on in my brain, thinking about my goals and getting them more focused, thinking about the band and where and how I want to go with that, thinking about booking agents or manager and trying to figure what's best with that, thinking about my "day" job and the two interviews I had today for different positions and which is going to work best or if I'll be hired or what!! So yeah it's been crazy.... bare with me as I cross all these hurdles - and share my thoughts and heart with you. You're comments are always welcome - good or bad - thanks so much for "listening" and reading.

RG

1st Blog/Music Success Challenge

I recently purchased a book, Music Success in 9 weeks, and signed up to do a challenge. There's a fantastic prize package for the winner, but in all honesty that's not the reason I'm doing this. I've been a musician for a while now, and actively pursued this solo/band thing for the last 3 years. I've read many articles and online help guides, even jotted down a few notes along the way. But this current book, has fueled a commitment, a focus, a zeal that I have been lacking. I'll be blogging along the way for the next 9 weeks (and actually longer) about this challenge and things that are happening in my life, my career, and my heart. I hope you come along for the journey. The first order of business for me was to clear my mind of all the clutter, and sit down and focus and THINK and WRITE about my goals. Not just with music, but for my life, financially, for my family. It opened the door for some great conversations with my wife, about things we want to accomplish. Goals we want to pursue. These conversations actually helped me see some of the financial burdens our family has and to help plan a course of action to free us of some debt. It was really a neat experience. I've always had a white board in my office for some goals that I've had, but in looking at the goals they've seemed more general. With the help of the book, I've actually sat down and focused and created some realistic short term (and long term) goals. Some with figures, some with just a statement. Some regarding music, some regarding my family, some regarding my own personal health. Things that I feel are important for the overall health of my marriage, my family, and my career. I look forward to sharing my thoughts, joys, struggles, passions, and failures with you. Hope you enjoy the ride!RG

Rocket Market - Aug 17, 2010

Just played a show at the Rocket Market.

Great place to play on a summer evening. I had played this venue before in the winter and honestly.... it was kind of dead... so I wasn't really sure what to expect this time around. When I pulled up to the venue, there were people already sitting outside on the patio. I quickly began setting up my equipment and getting my sound check completed. Show time quickly came upon me, and as I gazed out - the patio was full. I quickly launched into my set and perfomed a mixture of songs from Sketches, songs not yet recorded and covers. The crowd was very appreciative and responded nicely - it was a pleasant venue and a great experience... I look forward to performing at The Rocket (hopefully with the band or with Justyn) again. Till next time..... peace!!!

New York....

So it's been a few weeks since I've gotten back from New York and I just wanted to write down a few quick thoughts! First - New York is amazing!!!! The hustle and bustle, the people, the fast pace - I've heard a lot of negative comments about New Yorkers but everyone that I dealt with was incredibly nice! I really only had one day to be a "tourist" but just the whole experience - driving past the Twin Towers memorial, walking through Central Park, seeing the area where John Lennon used to walk and Yuko Ono's building, taking a ride in a subway, experiencing the taxi drivers. It is something I'll never forget and something that I soon hope to enjoy again. New York you've found a place in my heart and I'll be coming back soon.
